Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” blocks Justin Bieber from ‘Billboard’ top spot

Bieber’s “Yummy” arrived in second place.

On Monday, Billboard announced that Roddy Ricch’s viral song, “The Box,” topped the Hot 100 Charts, blocking Justin Bieber from hitting number one with his new single, “Yummy.”

“The Box” appears on Ricch’s debut studio offering, Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, which arrived in December. The song, co-written by Ricch and Samuel “30Roc” Gloade, rose to prominence after it was featured in numerous TikTok dance videos and turned into a meme.

The chart-smasher entered the Hot 100 four weeks ago, arriving at the 13th spot before it climbed to first place on January 13. “The Box” earned 68.2 million US streams and over 11,000 downloads in the week ending January 9, Billboard reports.

Ricch’s triumph came as a surprise after Bieber rolled out an elaborate streaming strategy last week to get his new song to number one. The plan’s instructions included creating a playlist with only “Yummy” on it and installing a VPN app to help “inflate Bieber’s stateside streaming numbers,” according to Forbes. But the singer’s strategy ultimately fell short as “Yummy” debuted at number two on the charts instead.

Following Billboard’s announcement, Bieber took to Twitter to congratulate the 21-year-old Compton rapper for earning the number one spot. “Thanks everyone. So thankful. #yummy. @RoddyRicch You had to go and make a banger smh!” the pop star said. “Haha ur the man!! Love the song!! congrats on your first #1!! Everyone go stream #thebox.”

Ricch had responded in kind, encouraging his fans to stream “Yummy” in return.
