Rich Brian has released a video for “DOA,” a cut from his latest EP 1999.
In the wacky clip, directed by Mamesjao, the 88rising rapper goes on a wild solo road trip around the world, exploring the ice-covered Antarctic to the scorching Sahara Desert. “Now I’m up, now I’m up / You’re too far away / It’s a D-O-A / Now I’m up and you’re stuck / And I know you hate it / It’s a D-O-A,” Brian sings on the retro-tinged pop song.
“It sounds morbid but it’s about competing with someone who has zero chance against you in the first place,” Brian said in a press statement. “The melodies really remind me of Gorillaz, who I love. It’s a song that I always play whenever I wanna feel better about my singing, and myself in general.”
“DOA” is the latest song from 1999 to receive the video treatment, following “Don’t Care” and “Love in My Pocket.” The latter received two versions, one which dropped alongside the EP and an “unfinished” version that was released in July. 1999 marks Brian’s first project of the year and follows his sophomore album, The Sailor.
