Public Enemy have released an animated video for the song, “Public Enemy Number Won.”
The clip features illustrated versions of the hip hop legends—Chuck D, DJ Lord and Flavor Flav—alongside featured guests Run-DMC, and Ad-Rock and Mike D of the Beastie Boys. It also pays homage to the groups’ late members Jam Master Jay and MCA.
“The song is an homage to ‘Public Enemy No 1’ and that moment in time,” Chuck D explained in a press release. “The Beastie Boys and Run-DMC were playing it all the time and Rick Rubin kept coming at us to sign with Def Jam. So it’s my way of bringing it all back together again.”
“Public Enemy Number Won” appears on the hip hop group’s latest studio full-length album, What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?, which arrived in September. It featured collaborations with a slew of artists including Cypress Hill, George Clinton, Ice-T, Nas and others. The album, released on Def Jam, marked their first full-length release on the label since 1998’s He Got Game.
