It seems like not even Post Malone can avoid a technical blip.
On Wednesday (October 14), the rapper performed for the annual Billboard Music Awards, which took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony, hosted by Kelly Clarkson, featured a mix of on-stage and isolated performances from Doja Cat, Brandy, BTS and others.
For his set, Posty performed two songs: his chart-topping hit “Circles” and his recent collab with Tyla Yaweh, “Tommy Lee.” Filmed at a secret industrial location in LA, the pre-recorded performance saw the rappers dance on construction machinery while fireworks went off in the background.
Yet, in spite of the jaw-dropping spectacle, some fans took to social media to slam the rapper for lip syncing. “Was the lip sync waaaay off on Post Malone or was it just my TV?” one user wondered, while another fan blasted him for apparently forgetting how to sing on stage.
“Post Malone on stage trynna figure out how tf to actually lip sync #BBMAs EMBRASSINGG!!!” the user tweeted.
Billboard later explained that both Malone and Yaweh had faced technical difficulties during their set, and that their audio “wasn’t perfectly synched up with the clip.”
Regardless, Posty still had plenty to celebrate that evening. The rapper, who led the nominations with 16 nods, walked away with nine trophies, including the biggest prize of the night for Top Artist. He also won the award for Top Rap Album with his 2019 LP Hollywood’s Bleeding, beating DaBaby’s Kirk and Young Thug’s So Much Fun.
“I’m honestly blown away by the love everyone’s shown to me,” Malone said during his acceptance speech. “It’s kind of a big deal to me and everybody involved because we work our asses off and try our best every day.” Watch his full Top Artist speech below:
