Pop Smoke was reportedly shot dead on Wednesday morning in a robbery at a home in Hollywood Hills. He was only 20 years old.
The Brooklyn drill rapper’s death was reported first by TMZ and later confirmed by his label to the New York Times. The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the murder, though no arrests have been made, CNN reported.
Pop Smoke first rose to fame last year with the hit “Welcome to the Party,” and had recently notched up collaborations with artists like Travis Scott, HER and PnB Rock, to name a few. He had released a new mixtape, Meet the Woo 2, last week.
Several hip hop artists took to social media to mourn the rising rapper. “Rest Up Pop Smoke, you were too young. God Bless and comfort your family. What a crazy trajectory you were on man smh,” Chance the Rapper tweeted.
Nicki Minaj, who released a remix of “Welcome to the Party” last August, called Smoke’s untimely passing “unbelievable.” “The Bible tells us that jealousy is as cruel as the grave. Unbelievable. Rest In Peace, Pop,” she wrote on Instagram.
