Pink Siifu, ShunGu connect on jazzy new song, “Cement”

Released as part of Mexican Summer’s ‘Looking Glass’ series.

Pink Siifu has teamed up with Brussels-based producer ShunGu for a brand-new song titled “Cement.”

The track was released exclusively on Bandcamp via indie label Mexican Summer’s charity single series, Looking Glass. All proceeds from the song will be donated to musicians whose livelihoods have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Cement” is only over a minute long, but ShunGu’s expert use of jazzy and soulful samples evokes a comforting sense of nostalgia. Over his crackling lo-fi beat, Pink Siifu delivers stream-of-consciousness bars about faith and finding inner peace. “Faith kept me away from the hell in the cell I was running towards / Kicking back on the shore, had to sleep on the shore / Praying for a better or some type of goddess,” he raps.

In a statement, Pink Siifu said that the collab felt like “a gospel to me.” “Eye [sic] don’t even know what [ShunGu] sampled but tha shit hit right to my core when eye heard it,” he wrote. “Reminded me of faith and picking ya self up. Tha elders got a sayin pick up ya self and tht wat this song does to me fr. Make me remember why I’m standing.”

“Cement” is Pink Siifu’s first release since his April album, Negro. That record, which was initially only available on his website, is finally up on major streaming services. Last year, the rapper released a joint album with Akai Solo, Black Sand, which included the track “Show Love.”
