Pharoahe Monch’s new hip hop trio TH1RT3EN have made their debut on NPR’s Tiny Desk.
The group, which also feature drummer Daru Jones and guitarist Marcus Machado, performed their set from a padded panic room. The trio played four tracks from their upcoming debut album, A Magnificent Day for an Exorcism, namely “The Magician,” “Cult 45,” “Scarecrow” and fan favorite “Fight.”
“Sure, we’ve always done socially and politically aware music, but I’m tired of this ‘love will win’ nonsense,” Monch told NPR. “Love may be the most powerful vibrating force, but consciousness is spreading and it’s impossible not to be more aware of the evil that has kept the world in complete darkness. TH1RT3EN is the musical personification of me and my comrades at combat.”
A Magnificent Day for an Exorcism is due out this Friday, January 22. Last year, Monch dropped the song “Same Sh!t, Different Toilet.” He had re-released his debut album Internal Affairs the year before.
