Petition launched to rename New York street after MF DOOM

It has already received over 5,000 signatures.

A petition has been launched to rename a street in New York after the late MF DOOM.

The petition, which has garnered over 5,000 signatures in less than a week, asks that the City of Long Beach rename East Hudson Street’s block between Riverside Boulevard and Long Beach Road “KMD-MF DOOM Way.” It notes that the rapper, born Daniel Dumile, had grown up in Long Beach and cites his life as “an example of inclusive community building and growth through individual struggle.”

Meanwhile, “KMD” refers to the group Dumile and his brother Dingilizwe in 1988 under the name Zev Love X in Long Beach with his brother Dingilizwe “DJ SubRoc” Dumile. The rapper’s brother died in a car accident a few years later, and the loss, alongside a bitter dispute with his record label, led to DOOM spending years out of the spotlight for years, during which he battled homelessness. Dumile went on to take his experiences on the streets of Long Beach and reinvented himself as MF DOOM.

“Mr Dumile represents the ability to grow through tragedy and unite people around common themes. We need more individuals like him during this time of political and social divisions,” the KMD-MF DOOM Way Committee writes.

“Mr Dumile still inspires many young people to view the potential of everyday life. Long Beach should be proud of its native son and honor him and his legacy on a street sign. Just as important, the city should embrace the unity Mr Dumile represents for generations to come.”

DOOM passed away at the age of 49 last Halloween. His death was announced by his wife Jasmine on New Year’s Eve. “The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for,” she wrote. “Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be.”
