Mr Muthafuckin’ eXquire has unveiled a new single called “Black Mirror,” produced by Madlib.
Billed as a “record about black masculinity and community,” “Black Mirror” is also a tribute to eXquire’s late Uncle Shango. “Wrote this with my eyes closed, on rose and moscato / Intuition inner visions flow from out the cosmos / N***as ask me how I made it I be damned if I know / I just went with my soul, and the rest it followed,” he raps over a sample of The Stylistics’ 1973 soul song, “Payback is a Dog.”
“I wrote this about Black Masculinity and my relationship with my three uncles (London, Flex and Shango). Two weeks ago I actually lost my Uncle Shango. If you know me closely you know my uncle was my everything,” the Brooklyn rapper wrote on Instagram. “I probably cried more tears than I ever have in my life the past two weeks. Still can’t believe he’s gone.”
Last month, the rapper released the fiery track, “Bootlicker (Burn Baby Burn),” in which he rails against police brutality and systemic racism. On that track, he also paid tribute to victims of police violence, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Tamir Rice.
