MF DOOM, Czarface are superheroes in “Bomb Thrown” video

The eclectic clip mashes up photo collages, stop-motion animation and comic book-inspired visuals.

Lyrical, lo-fi and old-school, the new single from Czarface and MF DOOM, “Bomb Thrown,” is one for the geeks. And its video, released earlier this week, is just as laden with pop culture references and inside jokes.

The video is at once gleeful and gritty, possessing all the off-kilter charm of a Michel Gondry short. Directed by Kendra Morris, it fuses photo collages, stop-motion animation and comic book-inspired visuals (“Kapow?!”) into three and a half frenzied minutes. In the clip, the hip hop supergroup and the masked rapper transform into superheroes as they battle dinosaurs, Skeletor and other characters from your typical ’90s Saturday morning cartoon.

And the tune itself pays homage to the smooth flows and lyrical depth of hip hop from the era. Inspectah Deck kicks things off with bars about money, power and respect, and MF DOOM closes the track in his inimitable, verbose style. “Catch him on stage, mad hype, with a trashed mic / More flavor in the gutter, glass pipe and a flashlight,” he rhymes.
