Logic teams up with Madlib on new single, “Mars Only pt. 3”

The Maryland rapper emerges from ‘retirement’ for the new project MadGic.

Logic has emerged from ‘retirement’ to team up with Madlib on the new project MadGic. The announcement arrived with the release of the duo’s first single, “Mars Only pt. 3.”

Atop bouncing basslines and saturated drums, Logic teases more to come from MadGic, hyping up their upcoming album. “Logic and Madlib is MadGic, your catalog tragic / Fuck a underground, fuck a pop sound / Made this whole album in a lockdown, hip hop is our town,” he raps.

Logic had ostensibly retired in July 2020 following the release of what he called his final album, No Pressure. But the Maryland rapper showed an openness to return to music, saying he’d drop a mixtape if a fan petition got a million signatures. And sure enough, earlier this month he dropped the one-minute track “Tired in Malibu.”

On the other hand, Madlib’s last full-length work was Sound Ancestors, a collaborative album with Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden. It featured the songs “Road of the Lonely Ones” and “Hopprock.”
