Run the Jewels have just shared “Let’s Go (the Royal We),” their newest track which plays during the credits of Marvel’s Venom.
The beat, as they put it, is “nasty” from the get-go: A filthy guitar riff opens the song followed by a pounding bassline and blaring sirens. The hip hop duo come through with the heat, too, spitting bloodthirsty rhymes. “We put them under the earth / We are savages ravaging hell / Death in the air, we relish the smell,” Killer Mike raps.
“We got a call and [Marvel] wanted us to write a record for [Venom]. And we were like, ‘Abso-damn-lutely,’” Mike told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe. “My man Nate in high school introduced me to the Venom character, and I’ve loved it ever since. Just the duality of trying to do righteous, and this rogue is just fighting with you from the inside. I thought it was a perfect match-up with the Run the Jewels spirit, so the record turned out dope.”
In the same interview, El-P also revealed that “Let’s Go (the Royal We)” came about from a score he initially submitted for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. “I just loved it so much that I was like, ‘I have to use this,’” he said.
