Common has made his return to music with “HER Love,” an ode to hip hop’s past and present that features vocals from Daniel Caesar and a previously unheard beat produced by the late J Dilla.
Over a groovy, soulful beat, Common shows his appreciation to those who’ve made a difference in the rap game, name-checking artists like A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, Lil Uzi Vert and Kendrick Lamar, as well as the late Nipsey Hussle. “Your eyes glisten, you talk vision of partyin’ / And gettin’ people out of prison / Through the struggle you taught us to Nipsey Hussle / That’s why we all love you,” he raps.
The accompanying video, on the other hand, takes on a different approach. Directed by Savanah Leaf, the visual celebrates black women of all shapes and sizes, with a guest appearance from soul singer Dwele.
Alongside the song’s release, Common also announced his follow-up to 2016’s critically acclaimed Black American Again. Titled Let Love Have the Last Word, after his memoir of the same name, the LP is set for release later this year.
“I love music so much. And on Let Love, this recommitting, rebirth and ‘re-love,’ if that’s a word, just came to fruition,” Common said in a press statement. “Music has always been the genesis of my creative life and it feels more than fulfilling, more than wonderful, and a joy that is hard to wrap up, to be giving my whole self to it again.”
