Lil Wayne charged with felony weapon possession

He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.

Lil Wayne has been charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.

According to The New York Times, the rapper born Dwayne Carter was charged on Tuesday and could face up to ten years behind bars, if convicted. The US attorney for the Southern District of Florida filed the charges after authorities received an anonymous tip that led to a search of the rapper’s private jet in Miami last December.

That’s when they discovered a “gold-plated .45-caliber Glock handgun” in the rapper’s luggage. In the warrant obtained by Miami Herald, Wayne told officials that he had received the gun as a Father’s Day gift.

Police also found bullets, illicit substances and over $25,000 in cash. Wayne, however, was not charged with any drug-related offenses.

In a statement, Wayne’s attorney Howard Srebnick said: “There is no allegation that he ever fired it, brandished it, used it or threatened to use it. There is no allegation that he is a dangerous person. The charge is that because he was convicted of a felony in the past, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.”

Earlier this year, Wayne released the deluxe version of his 2018 album, Tha Carter V. Prior to that, he released the expanded edition of his 13th studio album, Funeral.
