Lil Tjay has been arrested and booked for criminal possession of a weapon, marijuana possession and grand larceny.
According to TMZ, police officers in Brooklyn, New York had pulled over the rapper for switching lanes without signaling on Wednesday (December 30, 2020). The cops then allegedly discovered four loaded handguns and a book bag filled with marijuana in the car.
However, neither Tjay nor his friends claimed ownership of the guns or weed, so they were each charged with possession. It’s currently unclear why the 19-year-old was also charged with grand larceny.
Tjay’s arrest arrives less than a week after his last run-in with NYPD officers, who confronted the South Bronx rapper while he was filming a music video on December 27, according to HipHopWired. A spokesperson for the department told reporters that the officers had been responding “to a 911 call of a disorderly group shooting a music video [and] flashing firearms in a courtyard.” Two vehicles were searched by officers; however, Tjay was not arrested.
On Friday (January 1), the rapper was released from jail after posting a bond of $50,000. According to the Page Six, he’s obtained legal aid from criminal defense lawyer Dawn Florio, who previously represented Tekashi 6ix9ine.
“They’re targeting Lil Tjay for this arrest based on the incident that happened a few days ago when they illegally searched him and the vehicle he was in at his video shoot,” Florio told the publication. “We’re vigorously defending the allegations.”
