Lil’ Kim wants to go up against Nicki Minaj in a Verzuz battle.
During the 2021 BET Awards pre-show on Sunday, Kim said she’s down to appear on the battle rap series, but only if she can take on Onika. After a reporter said, “I would love to see that,” Kim replied, “Yes, me too.”
The two rappers have been in a long-standing feud, beginning with Minaj’s cover art for her 2007 Playtime is Over mixtape. Kim claimed the artwork too closely resembled her own iconic cover for her 1996 debut album, Hard Core, but Minaj’s supporters said she was just paying homage. The pair continued to trade subliminal shots over the years, like in Nicki’s songs “Roman’s Revenge” and “Stupid Hoe,” and on Kim’s Black Friday mixtape—a direct play on Nicki’s debut album, Pink Friday.
However, in 2018, Kim said on Real 92.3 that she was ready to move on from the feud. “I’m past that. I’m over it,” she said at the time. “She did what she did. Until she’s ready, hopefully, God puts it on her mind to do the right thing because she knows what she did.”
Fans have been clamoring for both Kim and Nicki to appear on the popular Verzuz series, but only time will tell whether this showdown will actually happen. Kim is set to release her memoir, Lil’ Kim: The Queen Bee, this November and Minaj is currently working on her fifth studio album. Last month, Minaj put her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty on streaming services.
The BET Awards 2021—which returned to an in-person format—was an eventful one. Cardi B revealed she was pregnant with her second child by Offset, on top of head-turning performances by Lil Nas X, Tyler, the Creator and more.
