A week after releasing a new album, up-and-coming Chicago rapper King Von was killed in a fatal shooting in Atlanta last Friday. He was 26.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, per CNN, gunshots were fired in the early hours of November 6 outside of a hookah lounge. The authorities reported that two groups of men had been arguing in the parking lot before the exchange of gunfire was heard. A police spokesman said that Von, whose real name Dayvon Bennett, and another man were killed in the altercation, while four others sustained injuries.
Officials announced that they had issued a warrant for the suspect in the shooting investigation. On Saturday, a 22-year-old man was arrested in connection to the incident and faces a felony murder charge, Complex reported. No other details have been released yet.
Von shot to fame recently after his 2019 mixtapes, Grandson, Vol 1 and LeVon James, charted on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Just a week ago, the rapper released his third album Welcome to O’Block.
Following news of his death, Von’s publicist Erin Ryan wrote in a statement that the rapper was just “beginning to grasp the depths of his talents.” Ryan added, “He was a devoted father, a deeply loyal friend, and a man who took care of his people before himself. We are heartbroken for his family, his friends, his team, and his fans.”
Hip hop artists and athletes, including Lebron James, whom Von named his LeVon James project after, have paid tribute to the late star. “Damn Rest Easy Von! Bronny, Bryce and I rocked with his music and story telling! The kid had a damn good future ahead of him,” the NBA player tweeted.
