Kevin Gates reflects on his struggles on new song “Still Hold Up”

The rapper wants you to know he’s “built Ford tough.”

Kevin Gates is back with a new single called “Still Hold Up.”

The Baton Rouge native has delivered a handful of loosies since releasing his I’m Him album last year, including “Always Be Gangsta Freestyle” and “Wetty (Freestyle).”

Now, Gates gets reflective over a piano-driven beat, courtesy of Patrick Carmelo and James Maddocks, for his latest track.

“I wanna handle baby daddy, it just ain’t happen yet/ My wife just sent that paper there, I just ain’t grab it yet / Nominated for the Grammys, I went back to jail / Racist judge found me guilty, sent me back to Hell,” he spits. On the hook, he asserts: “I’m built Ford tough, and I still hold up.”

Gates trod the same lyrical territory—legal troubles, his path to self-improvement and relationship with his wife, Dreka—on his 17-track solo effort, I’m Him. So far, Gates hasn’t revealed whether these new tracks will culminate in a follow-up project.
