Kendrick Lamar responds to label departure rumors

“Top, you gotta stop them from smutting my name, man.”

Kendrick Lamar recently came out of hiding—well, sort of—to quash earlier rumors that he had parted ways with his longtime label Top Dawg Entertainment.

Yesterday, TDE’s head honcho Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith posted on his Instagram a rather peculiar video message from Lamar, who addressed the label boss from behind a Blue’s Clues stuffed toy. “Top, you gotta stop them from smutting my name, man,” the rapper said at the beginning of the clip, before adding that he’d had enough.

“They been smuttin’ my name all year, man, you ain’t said nothin’. Enough is enough, man. Got ’em sayin’ I done shook the label and all that, man,” Lamar continued. He later hinted that he was too busy “watching cartoons” to even fuel the rumors.

According to XXL, speculation around Lamar’s departure from TDE cropped up over the weekend after several tweets claimed that the rapper had left the label to focus on his new creative service company, pgLang, which he launched earlier this year with frequent collaborator Dave Free.

Back in May, Tiffith confirmed that K-Dot would “return soon,” telling fans to “stay patient.” Details about the progress on Lamar’s new releases or projects remain unclear, though XXL recently reported that the rapper was spotted filming what looked like a new music video.
