Kamaiyah takes it “Back to Basics” in new video

She samples Michael McDonald’s 1982 song “I Keep Forgettin’.”

Kamaiyah goes old-school on her new single, “Back to Basics.”

On the throwback song, the California rapper delivers rhythmic bars about her gratitude to God for her career. “Learn to always be thankful / Who do I give praise to? / These sick hoes who love you and hate you / I only give God the glory and praise / ’Cause how could I not be grateful?” she raps overs over a sample of Michael McDonald’s 1982 hit “I Keep Forgettin’.”

In the accompanying video, Kamaiyah performs the song in her lavish home, as she lounges on a luxe chair by the fireplace. The visual also features behind-the-scenes shots of the rapper in the recording studio.

“Back to Basics” is Kamaiyah’s first release since she was arrested for allegedly firing a gun during a private movie screening. She was soon released on $35,000 bond after police determined the incident was accidental. Back in June, she teamed up with Quavo and Tyga on “Windows.”
