JPEGMAFIA jumps on Tkay Maidza’s new single, “Awake”

The track dropped alongside a dizzying music video.

Zimbabwean-born Australian rapper Tkay Maidza has linked up with JPEGMAFIA on a new single titled “Awake.”

The hard-hitting track dropped alongside an energetic video. In the clip, the rappers deliver their verses in a dimly lit warehouse while strobe lights flash to the beat. “Late night, probably awake / Text me, probably awake / FaceTime, probably awake / Rollin’, rollin’ up and down the place,” goes the chorus. Around the halfway mark, the track transitions into “IDC if You Be Ded,” an unreleased song by the Aussie rapper.

“[‘Awake’] is about insomnia,” Maidza said in a press release. “I came up with the hook one night when I couldn’t sleep and it was in the middle of the night of a writing trip where I was up late ’til at least 3am every night for a whole month. We flipped the track and made it about what I do while I’m not sleeping. Then JPEG came and took it to another dimension.”

“Awake” is a taste of Maidza’s forthcoming as-yet-untitled mixtape, due out next year. On the other hand, JPEGMAFIA recently dropped a video for “Jesus Forgive Me, I Am a Thot.”
