JID returns with poignant new single, “Skegee”

About the infamous Tuskegee Experiment.

JID has returned with his first solo single of 2021, “Skegee.”

On it, the Dreamville rapper pays tribute to the Alabama city at the centre of the Tuskegee Experiment, a harrowing episode in African-American history. In the early 1930s, Black men from Tuskegee were recruited for a medical study on syphilis that left many of them with severe health problems, some of which were fatal.

“I remember my dad always preaching Black history to me, anytime anyplace anywhere we went he made me question everything,” JID wrote on Instagram. “This song is a lesson I learned a long time ago and felt necessary to use my platform to spread the knowledge of the history of our people in this country, it is not a slight at anyone, it’s a moment of reflection.”

Earlier in the month, JID shared a remix of his 2017 single “Bruuuh,” featuring Denzel Curry. Prior to that, he dropped two other songs: “Ballads” with Conway the Machine and the freestyle “Cludder.” Last year, JID and his group Spillage Village made their major label debut with their sophomore album, Spilligion.

“Skegee” was accompanied by a black-and-white visual that follows JID around the Alabama city. Watch it below:
