J Cole is set to release new music as his alter ego kiLL edward.
According to Billboard, the rapper recently revived the official Instagram account for his old moniker kiLL edward, who last appeared as the sole guest on Cole’s 2018 album KOD.
A message posted to kiLL edward’s Instagram Story read: “Damn been off for awhile but ima make sure we end 2020 something special.” It then asked fans to “stay tuned.” No other details have been revealed yet. Check out the message as archived by HipHopDX below.
Cole developed the kiLL edward persona in 2014 when he began to experiment with his rap style and production.
“I had told so much of my story from [the projects] The Come Up, The Warm Up, Born Sinner, Forest Hills Drive, and it was always about me, my aspirations, my dreams, my pains,” Cole told Angie Martinez in 2018. “It was a box. I started feeling limited. I had been telling my story for so many projects.”
“Another thing that came out of that was I started experimenting with the music,” he continued. “The production, my voice, and I started doing these songs in this ‘kiLL edward’ style. I didn’t have a name, I just had these songs … I needed a fire name. It checks that box and then secondly, when I say ‘kiLL edward,’ it’s the stuff I feel like I inherited from him. There’s some shit in me I don’t like and that’s the shit I wanna kill off.”
Cole is currently working on his sixth studio album, The Fall Off. In July, he previewed two self-produced songs from the record: “The Climb Back” and “Lion King on Ice.” Prior to that, the rapper released “Snow on tha Bluff,” a track that many speculated was a diss at rapper Noname and her activism on social media.
