J Cole slings new “Album of the Year” freestyle, and it’s off the chain

The rapper puts his spin on Nas and the Bravehearts’ “Oochie Wally.”

J Cole has released a new freestyle, “Album of the Year,” and it hears him spitting some hard-hitting bars over Nas and the Bravehearts’ “Oochie Wally.” He’s also revealed a clip for the track, directed by Simon David.

The freestyle celebrates his new album KOD, which broke Apple Music and Spotify streaming records. He doesn’t beat around the bush in asserting his opinion of the record and his talent. “Don’t want to fuck up my vibe / Let’s end it on a positive note, come see me live / KOD, album of the year, undebatably / My cadence be the greatest we’ve seen since the late MC who’s name was The Notorious,” he spits.

The Simon David-directed clip is a masterclass in editing, with quick cuts of Cole rapping in various locations, like a school, a convenience store, and a graffiti-tagged tunnel. It’s a well-made visual that takes nothing away from the blunt lyrics off the track. Yet another “W” for Cole.
