Rhythm & Flow winner D Smoke has connected with his brother, SiR of Top Dawg Entertainment, for a cinematic, star-studded clip for their song “Lights On.”
The video, which was directed by Jack Begert, stars Insecure’s Issa Rae as a gun-wielding stripper who schemes with Smoke and SiR to rob the club she works at. The slow-motion clip, which plays out in reverse, sees Raehold her boss—played by Danny Trejo—at gunpoint, as she stuffs bills into her purse. The rappers oversee Rae’s getaway car, as she dodges retaliatory bullets and flees with the money.
“We wanted to tell a story without bias, that simply shows a series of events tied to an empowered woman who takes what she wants and is willing to face the consequences that result,” Smoke told Variety of the clip. “No one should judge how another makes ends meet. Keep the lights on.”
“As creatives, we’re always a little excited to rattle the collective zeitgeist,” he continued. “The beauty of having Issa Rae involved as our lead exotic dancer, we hope the video accomplishes that. She’s a creative force who’s been disrupting the industry for nearly ten years and we’re ecstatic she saw this as an opportunity to display her talent in a new light.”
“Lights On” appears on Smoke’s debut album Black Habits, which dropped in February. It featured collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Jill Scott, Ari Lennox, Jackie Gouche and more. In 2019, he dropped his first-ever EP, Inglewood High, which included the songs “Honey Jack” and “Lil’ Red.”
