Hemlock Ernst flaunts wordplay on new collab with Kenny Segal

“Down” demands attentive listening.

Hemlock Ernst—the rap alter ego of Samuel T Herring, the frontman of synth pop band Future Islands—has released “Down,” a new joint track with Kenny Segal.

Herring locks into a deep groove on the dense song, his loquacious bars tumbling over each other with hardly a pause. It’s an attention-grabbing first single from Back at the House, Hemlock Ernst and Segal’s forthcoming project on the tape label Ruby Yacht.

Back at the House is Hemlock Ernst’s second joint release with a producer: He connected with Madlib for Trouble Knows Me in 2015. Segal, on the other hand, recently teamed up with billy woods on the album Hiding Places, released this past August.
