Hear Post Malone cover Hootie and the Blowfish

A rendition of “Only Wanna Be With You” for Pokémon’s 25th anniversary.

Post Malone has shared his take on Hootie and the Blowfish’s 1994 song, “Only Wanna Be With You,” released in conjunction with Pokémon’s 25th anniversary.

Dubbed the “Pokémon 25 Version,” Posty’s rendition breathes new life into the Hootie hit while still keeping the original guitar-driven melody. However, there was one notable change: Instead of referencing the Miami Dolphins on the opening line, Malone gave a shoutout to the Dallas Cowboys, his favorite NFL team.

“You like to laugh at me when I look at other girls / Sometimes you’re crazy and you wonder why / I’m such a baby ’cause the Cowboys make me cry,” he sings.

The song dropped just in time for the rapper’s appearance at the virtual Pokémon Day concert, which took place on February 27.

Following the cover’s release, Hootie frontman Darius Rucker praised Post for his updated rendition. “It’s awesome to see that a song we wrote almost 30 years ago continues to resonate as it really speaks to the lasting life a song can have when people connect with it,” Rucker told Variety. “I love seeing someone like Post put his own spin on it like he does with everything he records.”

He added: “He always has a fresh way to say things, I love that he changed ‘the Dolphins make me cry’ to ‘the Cowboys’!”
