Hear ‘Creed II’ track “The Mantra” with Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar

Another song from the film’s soundtrack, headed and produced entirely by Mike Will Made-It.

Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar and Mike Will Made-It have released “The Mantra,” a new song from the soundtrack to Creed II, a week before the film’s release.

The track is a call for single-minded focus and determination. “You ain’t supposed to worry ’bout it when you pray / As far as I’m concerned, it’s in the way,” Pharrell sing-raps. “If what you’re doing don’t help you elevate / As far as I’m concerned, it’s in the way.”

KDot, delighting in his upper register, balances out Pharrell’s tough talk with some knotty, evocative lines: “She stargaze out through the cosmic / Amped up, we blew out the metropolis.”

The luminous beat, produced by Mike Will—who also helmed the entire soundtrack—and Myles Harris, is a little mellower than what we’ve come to expect from both rappers, whose hits revel in bouncy, aggressive sounds. But it’s still a treat to hear these A-listers get slower, more melodic flows off.

Creed II: The Album is out November 21, the same day as the film. Stream “The Mantra” below:
