Gang Starr, J Cole honor Guru in “Family and Loyalty” video

The rapper died in April 2010 from cancer.

DJ Premier of Gang Starr has released a video for the group’s comeback song “Family and Loyalty,” featuring J Cole.

The clip pays tribute to the late MC Guru, the other member of Gang Starr who passed away in April 2010 from cancer. The visual celebrates his legacy with archival footage of his performances, and features an appearance from Keith Casim, the rapper’s 19-year-old son. J Cole pops up later in the video, performing his verse in a gymnasium.

“Keith was nine when his father passed away and he is now 19. I used to babysit him. He made me feel like Guru was there with me,” Premier said in a statement. “I told him he has the same look in his eyes as his father and everyone on set commented on how striking the resemblance is. It was real important to me to have Guru’s son be a major focus of the video.”

“Family and Loyalty,” which dropped two weeks ago, is the first Gang Starr release in over 16 years. The last Gang Starr album, The Owners, was released in 2003.
