In 2014, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib put out a joint album titled Piñata, immediately establishing themselves as a rapper-producer duo to be reckoned with. Now, they’ve released “Flat Tummy Tea” to whet everyone’s appetite for the follow-up, Bandana.
With a runtime of less than three minutes, “Flat Tummy Tea” is practically a sprint. But Madlib switches the beat up about halfway through, and the ever-nimble Gibbs takes to the woozier second half as easily as he does the first. The gangsta rapper roves widely, addressing the transatlantic slave trade (“Crackers came to Africa, ravaged, raffled, and rummaged me / America was the name of they fuckin’ company”) and hip hop’s favorite deadly drink, lean (“Addicted to medication, just poured another line up / Overdosed with a styrofoam cup, how they gon’ find us?”).
