YNW Melly and YNW Bortlen were arrested in February and charged with murdering YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser in what prosecutors claim was a staged drive-by shooting last October. Melly pled not guilty in March, and now, reports reveal that Florida prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the 19-year-old rapper.
The prosecution has “indicated [a push for the death penalty] since the beginning of this case,” Melly’s lawyer Jason Roger Williams told Billboard. “The prosecution wasn’t hiding the ball on this. They were very clear in articulating this was their plan.”
The prosecution will apparently disclose evidence at a hearing this Thursday, said Nicole Burdett, a member of Melly’s legal team. “We’ve received some paper documents, but there’s over 30 CDs of surveillance and records, which they intend to turn over to us,” she told Billboard.
Melly appears to be holding up well behind bars. “We talked to him not too long ago and he’s in good spirits,” Williams told Billboard. “He’s at a very wonderful, critical juncture of his career. I know he wishes he could be out here making music and performing.”
The rapper’s most recent project is We All Shine, which dropped in January. His video for “Mama Cry” was released after his arrest.
