Eminem has shared a dramatic UFC-inspired visual for “Higher.”
The video was released ahead of one of the most exciting matches in this UFC season—between mixed martial artist Dustin Poirier and returning Irish champ Conor McGregor. In the black-and-white clip, Em readies for battle while hyping himself up in the locker room.
Midway, the clip features a spoof of a SportsCenter interview with ESPN’s Michael Eaves and UFC president Dana White. “If we’ve learned anything from watching 8 Mile is that when it comes to battle rap, don’t come for Eminem,” Eaves says. But when White rebuffs Eaves’ claims, Slim Shady interrupts their conversation and calls the UFC chief an “asshole.”
The scene then cuts to Em entering the ring to take on his opponent. But instead of using his fists, the rapper fights using his greatest weapon of all: his words. “’Til my last breath leaves my lungs / I’mma beat my drum for the streets I’m from / The East side slums, gotta remind ’em / I’ll take a foe out, like fee-fi-fum,” he spits.
“Higher” is a cut off Em’s Music to Be Murdered By – Side B, the deluxe edition of his 2020 album Music to Be Murdered By. It added 16 new songs to the original tracklist, including collaborations with Dr Dre, Ty Dolla $ign, Dr Premier and Skylar Grey.
