EarthGang member Olu has released a soulful cover of Marvin Gaye’s classic 1971 song, “What’s Going On.”
Along with the cover, Olu also penned an op-ed piece, which was published by DJBooth. In the article, he discusses COVID-19, ongoing activism efforts and dedicates the Marvin Gaye cover to his late father.
“We all had plans for 2020. We all had goals to better our lives. And here we sit, fighting a global disease, struggling to eat, struggling to keep a roof over our head, struggling to educate our children and keep them safe, struggling to save the world from climate change while fighting racism, sexism, [classism], and individualism… It’s a lot to deal with,” the Atlanta rapper writes. “So, singing becomes this cathartic activity when you can’t cry because you aren’t exactly sure what you are feeling.”
The cover follows EarthGang’s remix of Madeon’s “No Fear No More” from earlier this month. The duo previously teamed up with TOKiMONSTA on “Fried for the Night.” The Dreamville artists released their last album Mirrorland in September.
