DJ Premier taps J Cole for first new Gang Starr song in 16 years

Listen to “Family and Loyalty” now.

DJ Premier has officially revived Gang Starr with “Family and Loyalty” featuring J Cole, the first new song under the moniker in 16 years.

The Dreamville leader’s rhymes chase previously unheard verses from the late MC Guru over a poignant, piano-heavy Premier beat. “Diamonds are forever like family, or loyalty / Or real rap songs like ‘CREAM’ and ‘My Melody,’” Guru raps on the hook. “Diamonds are forever like my infinite thought / Like respect in the hood that can’t be bought.”

“Family and Loyalty” officially confirms rumors of new Gang Starr music that have been circulating in the past week. DJ Premier himself kickstarted the rumor mill by posting a snippet of a voicemail from Nas, who’d called to ask if it was true Premier was reviving Gang Starr. “I gotta call Nas…” the DJ wrote.

DJ Premier and MC Guru were the most famous iteration of Gang Starr. The Brooklyn jazz rap duo’s last album was 2003’s The Ownerz. Guru died in April 2010 from cancer.

It still remains to be seen if “Family and Loyalty” will be part of a new Gang Starr album. Stream it here while you wait for more details:
