DJ Official killed in drive-by shooting

The Grammy-winning producer had worked with the likes of Cardi B and Nipsey Hussle.

André Wakefield, who’s better known by his moniker DJ Official, was confirmed dead on Friday after suffering multiple gunshot wounds.

According to reports by NBC Los Angeles, Wakefield was killed during a double drive-by shooting that occurred right outside of his home in South LA. The music producer had been with one other person when an unknown shooter fired at them before fleeing in a black SUV. His friend currently remains in stable condition, officials announced in a statement.

Wakefield’s grandfather, Lee Carter, was mowing the lawn at the time when he witnessed the shooting. “He was a good person,” Carter told reporters of his grandson. “All he did was go to work and come home […] He didn’t belong in [a] gang or nothing like that.”

At only 26 years of age, Wakefield has already had an illustrious music career. Earlier this year, the producer won a Grammy for his work on Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy album. He’s also worked alongside rappers like Tyga, King Combs, Rich the Kid and the late Nipsey Hussle, among others.

Following news of Wakefield’s death, several hip hop artists including Mustard and Ty Dolla $ign have taken to social media to pay tribute. Read their posts below.
