Dave East has finally dropped his long-awaited debut album, Survival, which was initially slated for release earlier this year.
The New York rapper enlisted an impressive line-up of heavy-hitters for the 20-track record, including Gang Starr’s DJ Premier, Rick Ross, Gunna, Mozzy, E-40 and Lil Baby. R&B singers Teyana Taylor and Jacquees are also featured on “Need a Sign” and “Alone,” respectively.
The full-length was executive produced by Nas, who contributes a verse to “Godfather 4.” East also pays tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle, who was fatally shot earlier this year, on “The Marathon Continues.”
“I’m not that one big hit guy, I always wanna give you a body of work, something that I done sat with and put my heart and soul into,” East said of his recording process in an interview with Capital XTRA’s Tim Westwood. “I don’t wanna just put out like, ‘Here’s some new Dave East music.’ I wanna sit with it for a thousand times. If I still like it, after a thousand times of listening, I’mma run with it.”
Survival is East’s official debut album. It’s the follow-up to mixtapes such as last year’s Beloved and 2017’s Paranoia: A True Story, which peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200.
