Cardi B releases statement after admitting she used to drug and rob men

“I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options.”

Another day, another drama in Cardi B’s world: Just days after she caught backlash for trademarking her signature phrase “Okurrr,” an old video of the rapper confessing she used to drug and rob men surfaced online.

“I had to go strip, I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to fuck me? Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s go back to this hotel,’ and I drugged n***as up, and I robbed them. That’s what I used to do,” she said in the resurfaced Instagram Live clip shared by Twitter user @HipHopRatchet.

Following blowback, which sparked the #SurvivingCardi hashtag, Cardi took to social media to publicly apologize for her past wrongdoing. In a long letter posted on Instagram, the rapper explained that the Live clip was recorded three years ago before her music career took off, and that she’s trying to be a “better me for myself, my family and my future.”

“There are rappers that glorify murder, violence, drugs [and] robbing, crimes they had to do to survive. I never glorified the things I brought up in that [IG Live clip]. I never even put those things in my music because I am not proud of it and feel a responsibility not to glorify [my past actions]. I made the choices that I did at the time because I had very limited options,” she wrote. “I was blessed to have been able to rise from that, but so many women have not. Whether or not they were poor choices at the time, I did what I had to do to survive.”

Amidst the controversy, Cardi’s partner Offset also jumped onto the ’Gram to defend his “ride or die,” posting a photo of the happy couple by the beach.
