It’s finally here: XXL has revealed its highly anticipated Freshman Class of 2019.
The 12th edition of the magazine’s annual list of hip hop up-and-comers features a total of 11 rappers. It includes some obvious hot favorites such as DaBaby, Gunna, Blueface and YBN Cordae. Roddy Rich, Lil Mosey, YK Osiris and Comethazine also made the cut.
This year’s line-up also introduces three female rappers: Megan Thee Stallion, Tierra Whack and Rico Nasty. This is the first time XXL has included more than two women on its list—the last time more than one woman qualified was in 2015 with Dej Loaf and Tink—signifying the rise and popularity of female emcees.

Over the next month, XXL will commence its new Freshman season by releasing a slew of content, from interviews and freestyles to cyphers and roundtable discussions surrounding each artist. It will all culminate in the Freshman live shows, which will take place on July 22 and 25 in New York and Los Angeles respectively.
Following the announcement, most of the rappers took to their social media to celebrate the good news. Blueface, in particular, decided to address fans who grumbled about their faves losing out.
“Class of 2019 if they not on here they didn’t make da cut don’t be upset your favorite artist didn’t live up to your expectations maybe next year 🤷🏾♂️,” the Cali native wrote on Instagram.
