Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey, who perform together as the rap duo Black Star, played an unreleased track in a recent episode of the podcast they’re co-hosting with comedian Dave Chappelle, The Midnight Miracle.
The first two episodes of the podcast debuted on Luminary last week, and with them the first new Black Star music in years. According to Hypebeast, the song is tentatively titled “Automatic” and was produced by Madlib. For this reason, the track, which can be heard near the end of the second episode of The Midnight Miracle, is likely a song off Black Star’s long-awaited Madlib-produced album.
Madlib previously confirmed that Black Star’s sophomore album was completed back in 2019. However, last summer, Kweli wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post that the project was not being released.
“… I want to see this come out as bad as y’all do, or more, but people who never made a beat, never wrote a rhyme in they life got they fingers in the pie and are being disrespectful to what me and my brothers built,” he wrote. “It’s in God’s hands now. I’m on to other things, life is too short to be disrespected by culture vultures. Maybe y’all will get to hear this album after I’m gone.”
Black Star haven’t commented on the album since, but their newly shared music has given fans hope that the project might one day be released. The record would mark the duo’s first album in over 20 years, following their 1998 studio debut, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.
Elsewhere on The Midnight Miracle, Kweli, Bey and Chappelle spoke with Chris Rock, Jon Hamm and Questlove and played music by Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and more.
