Black Star reunite at Robert Glasper’s Blue Note residency

There’s nothing like Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli trading rhymes live.

Jazz pianist Robert Glasper is in the thick of a month-long residency at Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, and last Sunday he had some very special guests come through: Black Star, aka Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) and Talib Kweli.

Blue Note was crowded that night, and the guest appearances fluid and forthcoming: Anderson Paak, who showed up to sing “Fall in Love” by Slum Village, welcomed Bey onstage to rap a few bars from his solo cut “Ms Fat Booty.” Soon after, Kweli joined Bey for “Thieves in the Night,” from Black Star’s only studio album, before going on to perform his own song, “Love Language.”

This unexpected performance by the two MCs will no doubt give hip hop heads a warm, fuzzy feeling, but hopefully it also pushes Black Star into the studio again. Fingers crossed.
