Anderson .Paak drops off a soulful new album, ‘Ventura’

How does it measure up to ‘Oxnard’?

Following the LP Oxnard that he released six months ago, Anderson .Paak has returned to drop another Dr Dre-produced album, Ventura.

The 11-track project, which .Paak announced just two months ago, is a truly star-studded affair—though the guests are less contemporary and more legendary. André 3000, Lalah Hathaway, Jazmine Sullivan, Sonyae Elise, Brandy and the late Nate Dogg appear on the record, and the single “Make it Better” features the one and only Smokey Robinson.

If Ventura comes off looser than Oxnard, that might be because its creation was more relaxed, as well. “[Dr Dre] let me have a lot of leeway on Ventura. He was like, it seems like you got it,” .Paak revealed in an Esquire interview. “I spread my wings on the production and on the writing and on these collaborations. Again, very ambitious, working with icons on this one as well. But it was chill working with Dre.”
