Yu Su drops psychedelic single, “Watermelon Woman”

Herbie Hancock-inspired space disco.

Vancouver-based producer Yu Su has released a new song, “Watermelon Woman.” It’s the title track of her forthcoming 12-inch single.

The song layers spacey synths and eclectic instrumentation over funky drum grooves, creating a hypnotic seven-minute trip that’s also dancefloor-worthy. “The whole idea of ‘Watermelon Woman’ comes from the beginning of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Watermelon Man’,” Su explained in a press statement. “I wanted to develop it into this [endlessly] fun and very ‘Silk Road’-sounding thing for everyone to enjoy.”

Watermelon Woman will be the China-born musician’s debut offering on Ninja Tune sub-label Technicolour. It follows the release of her April EP, Roll with the Punches, and arrives August 23.
