What So Not shares “We Can Be Friends” with Herizen

The Australian DJ takes a backseat on his new single.

What So Not has dropped “We Can Be Friends,” his first original release since last year’s Not All the Beautiful Things.

The track, featuring Herizen (who’s better known for her role as Mylene Cruz on Netflix’s The Get Down), is a slightly left-field offering from the future bass producer. Instead of boisterous bass drops and crackling synths, “We Can Be Friends” features a lush, cruisy beat to match the song’s melancholic lyrics. “I don’t wanna be with you anymore, anymore / But we can be friends, we can be friends,” Herizen croons on the chorus.

Earlier this week, What So Not explained on Twitter how the collaboration came about: “I met Herizen [at] a writing camp in Nicaragua. Soon after we met up in LA. She was in a bit of a state and belted out this chorus over some chords I was playing, first take. It was a very real moment. We caught it and ran with it.”

The Australian DJ also added that he made the production light so listeners could focus on “[Herizen’s] beautiful and haunting [vocals].”
