Norwegian producer Cashmere Cat—aka Magnus Høiberg—has announced his sophomore album with lead single “Emotions.” The record is titled Princess Catgirl after a persona the producer has described as “the face of my music.”
Needle-sharp vocals intertwine with taut drums on the new track, contrasting with a lo-fi array of auxiliary percussion. Benny Blanco and Elof Loelv contributed production to “Emotions,” while Swedish artist Tove Stryke also has a songwriting credit.
Its music video introduces the titular Princess Catgirl, who cuts a whimsical figure as she twirls around a forest. The clip breaks the fourth wall at the end, revealing actress Margaret Qualley as the motion-captured Princess dancing with Cashmere Cat.
The producer described Princess Catgirl as “very cute and powerful” in a press release. “I’ve always been shy—since the beginning of being an artist I would hide my face, not want to do interviews, hide behind other artists,” he said. “I guess you could say I was scared. So I created Princess Catgirl to be the face of my music. She makes me feel safe.”
Cashmere Cat has been quiet on the solo music front, only releasing “Miss You” with Major Lazer and Tory Lanez last year after his well-received 2017 debut, 9. He did, however, produce and co-write Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s steamy “Señorita” collab.
Princess Catgirl is due out September 20. Watch the “Emotions” video here:
