Chvrches on Friday shared a video of their live cover of Beyoncé’s “XO.” But rather than putting their synth pop touch on the track, the Scottish trio flipped the script on its head: The performance is gentle and stripped-down, with little coming in-between Lauren Mayberry’s lilting vocals and all the feels.
The band threw out the synths and drum machines, replacing them with acoustic instruments in a grand piano and nylon-stringed guitar. And that’s it. It may be weird to hear the act without their trademark sounds, yet their urgent, soul-searching vibes still form the bedrock of the cover. Mayberry has come a long way as a vocalist, too. She didn’t sound quite as confident when Chvrches broke out in 2013 as she does here.
This performance is part of a series Chvrches did with Honda Stage. They also performed their breakthrough single “The Mother We Share” and “Get Out,” a tune off their third album, Love is Dead, coming May 25.
