Watch Aluna Francis’ sumptuous video for “The Recipe”

Inspired by the title of Francis’ solo album ‘Renaissance.’

Aluna Francis has shared a lavish music video for her collaboration with Kaytranada and Rema, “The Recipe.”

The video, set at a garden party, teems with Black dancers and models in period dress and luxurious outfits, led by Francis, who dances with a run of gentlemen before being hoisted up aloft as belle of the ball.

The video was directed by Reggie., aka the duo of Clay Dirkse and Jake Herman. The filmmakers took inspiration from the Elizabethan era, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Wiz and more for the clip.

“I wanted to play with the way history has been dictated to us,” Francis explained in a statement. “Growing up in England, you are constantly exposed to glamorous white history of period dramas without a Black person in sight. I feel that since the British Empire was so heavily funded by slavery that history is ours too; we’ve just never been pictured in the finery… and I wanted to see what that would look like.”

“The Recipe” was released earlier this year as part of Francis’ first non-AlunaGeorge album release, Renaissance. It also featured the tracks “Envious,” “Get Paid,” “Warrior” and “Body Pump.”
