The Avalanches enlist Blood Orange for their comeback single

“We Will Always Love You” samples The Roches and Smokey Robinson.

Aussie duo The Avalanches have ended their four-year hiatus with “We Will Always Love You,” featuring Blood Orange—aka Dev Hynes.

On the dreamy song, Hynes’ delivers hypnotic spoken-word verses over an interpolation of “I’ll Take You Anywhere That You Come” by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. A sample of The Roches’ haunting vocals, from “Hammond Song,” also features prominently on the track’s chorus.

“Every voice ever played on the radio over the last 100 years now exists in the stars; the transmissions of these singers are forever floating around out there, lost in the cosmos, endless traveling,” The Avalanches said in a press statement. “Tonight Smokey Robinson duets with Dev Hynes and The Roches. Those spirits are out there. We are each a tune, floating in space. And this one’s for you.”

Back in 2016, the Australian duo released their sophomore album Wildflower, which featured contributions from Toro y Moi, MF Doom, Father John Misty and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. The record was the long-awaited follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2000 debut, Since I Left You.
