Producer and Grimes collaborator i_o dies, aged 30

He had dropped a single, “Castles in the Sky,” just days before his passing.

Producer and DJ i_o, real name Garrett Falls Lockhart, has died at the age of 30.

News of Lockhart’s passing on November 23 was confirmed in a statement shared on his official i_o account. No cause of death was given.

“On Monday, November 23rd, the world lost a beautiful soul,” the tweet read. “This extremely talented spirit taught us that even if nothing matters, you can still lead with love. Garrett’s truth and soul lives on through the music he shared. Rest in peace, Garrett. We love you.”

i_o enjoyed a sharp rise to fame via his club-friendly production and high-profile collaborations, including with Grimes on the Miss Anthropocene track “Violence.” Among the first to pay their respects to Lockhart was Deadmau5, who signed the artist to his label in 2017 before the producer moved on to Armada Music to launch his own imprint, Label 444.

“Going to miss you my dude, it was a real pleasure working with you and watching you succeed,” Deadmau5 tweeted. “May you find rest, and let your music live on into eternity.”

Grimes also mourned Lockhart with her own tribute, declaring, “This is such a tragedy for Art. Of all my friends, I listened to Garrett’s music the most. It was SUCH an honor to know you. I feel crazy uncontrollably anxious and sick. I know this is touching ppl in music hard, around if any1 needs to talk. Rest In Peace Lord of Techno.”

“Castles in the Sky,” Lockhart’s final single, was released just days before his death. It followed a massive collection of music dropped across 2020 that included Lockhart’s revolution EP with Raito and two tracks with T78, among other solo releases.
