New Order have broken their four-year silence with the release of new single “Be a Rebel.”
Laden with glorious ’80s synths and a dancey beat, “Be a Rebel” is the new wave veterans’ first new release since 2015’s Music Complete. “In tough times we wanted to reach out with a new song,” singer Bernard Sumner shared in a statement. “We can’t play live for a while, but music is still something we can all share together. We hope you enjoy it… until we meet again.”
Speaking to NME, drummer Stephen Morris revealed that the new single unfortunately isn’t a sign of a larger release from New Order just yet. “It’s just a one-off at the minute. We thought we’d start with one and then see how it goes,” he explained.
New Order’s last studio full-length Music Complete dropped in 2015 with guest appearances from Iggy Pop, the Killers’ Brandon Flowers and La Roux. It was also the band’s first album recorded with new bassist Tom Chapman, who replaced founding member Peter Hook after the latter left the group in 2007.
