Martin Garrix, Maejor revive AREA21 with “La La La”

Their new material is “like Gorillaz meets Outkast meets little bit of Daft Punk.”

Martin Garrix has reformed his dance duo AREA21 with Maejor, releasing “La La La” alongside an otherworldly music video.

“La La La” is the first single from AREA21 since their 2019 track “Help.” A funk bassline weaves its way through the euphoric song alongside shimmering, sporadic guitar, introducing fans to a brand-new sound that steps away from AREA21’s earlier dance-focused production.

“We basically made a whole album,” Garrix confirmed in an interview on TikTok late last year. “I play a lot of guitar and drums. The new stuff is not super electronic. It’s like Gorillaz meets Outkast meets little bit of Daft Punk. It’s very playful.”

The single’s accompanying animated music video follows AREA21 on an intergalactic quest, abducting aliens across the galaxy for a massive concert in space. Garrix revealed in the same TikTok interview that the entire album will be accompanied by more animated visuals.

No further details have been shared regarding AREA21’s forthcoming debut album just yet. Garrix previously released “Pressure” with Tove Lo earlier this year, while Maejor dropped his debut album Frequency, Vol 1.1 last May.
